MUNCIE, Ind. – The Central Michigan gymnastics team dropped its season-opening dual to Ball State on Sunday at the Cardinals' Worthen Arena.
Ball State finished with a 193.500 team total to the Chippewas' 192.375.
CMU led 145.900-144.700 entering the final rotation, the Chippewas on balance beam, the Cardinals on floor exercise. The Chippewas struggled to a 46.475 on beam while Ball State posted a 48.600 on floor to surge to the win.
"It definitely was experience," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "Our first half of the lineup are all new balance beam workers. It's unfortunate because they've been doing the job in the gym. Definitely a learning moment and we'll get better from it."
The beam overshadowed an otherwise good opening-day performance by CMU as sophomore Hannah DeMers won the vault, tied for first on uneven parallel bars, and placed second on both balance beam and floor exercise and won the all-around (39.175).
Chippewa junior Sierra DeMarinis won the floor exercise and finished second in the all-around.
"There were positives throughout the day," MacDonald said. "We definitely had some shining moments and got a couple of freshmen their first college experience. They did a great job. There's a lot of bright spots and as a team we're going to get back to work and from there it's one day at a time."
CMU senior Sydney Williams tied for second on vault and one of those freshmen, Adriana Bustelo, placed third on bars.
"We're trying different lineups, we're working through and it's changing, and it'll continue to change," MacDonald said. "We just have to be very patient with the process and build off of every performance."
The Chippewas are scheduled to go to Western Michigan for a MAC dual on Sunday, Jan. 31 (1 p.m.).
