MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan gymnastics teams is scheduled to go to rival Western Michigan on Sunday (1 p.m.) for a Mid-American Conference dual with the Broncos at Western's Read Fieldhouse.
Last Time Out
The Chippewas opened the season with a 192.375 score in a dual last weekend at Ball State. The Cardinals won the meet with a 193.500.
CMU posted respectable-to-good scores – particularly for a season-opening meet – on uneven parallel bars (48.700), vault (48.700) and floor exercise (48.500) but struggled on balance beam (46.475) in the final rotation.
Sophomore Hannah DeMers led the Chippewas by winning the vault and the all-around, tying for first on bars, and placing second on balance beam and on floor exercise.
While the meet result was, ultimately, a disappointment for the Chippewas, there is plenty of season ahead, coach Christine MacDonald said, and plenty of time to get things sorted out.
"There were positives throughout the day," she said. "We definitely had some shining moments (and) there were a lot of bright spots and as a team we're going to get back to work and from there it's one day at a time.
"We're trying different lineups, we're working through and it's changing, and it'll continue to change. We just have to be very patient with the process and build off of every performance."
Where They Stand
The Chippewas' season-opening 192.375 ranks 44th nationally.
DeMers won the all-around at Ball State with a 39.175 score, which ties her for 25th in the nation. DeMers ranks among the top 100 nationally on vault, bars and floor exercise, with a high of 29th on vault.
Scouting
Western posted a 193.775 scoring in dropping its season opener, at home, to Northern Illinois last week.
Bronco sophomore Payton Murphy won the vault, the balance beam and the all-around in the meet against NIU, while Ronni Binstock, another sophomore, won the floor exercise.
Statistically, Western's best event was the floor (48.825). The Broncos scored 48.450 on vault, 48.425 on bars, and 48.075 on beam.
Next
The Chippewas are scheduled to go to Bowling Green on Friday, Feb. 5 for a MAC meet. The Falcons are 0-2 and are scheduled to go to Northern Illinois for a dual on Sunday.
