Unique mentor-student quad on tap for Jan. 16 at McGuirk Arena
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan wrestling team is set to open the 2021-22 season on Nov. 6 at the Michigan State Open, kicking off a challenging schedule.
That schedule includes a trip to two of the most prestigious annual events in the nation, the National Duals and the Midlands Championships, dual meets with instate rivals Michigan and Michigan State, and a special and unique event, the Chippewa Challenge.
The Chippewas' annual Maroon & Gold intrasquad is scheduled for Oct. 25 at McGuirk Arena, and then CMU opens the season at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 6. CMU's first dual is scheduled for Dec. 3 when it welcomes Mid-American Conference foe Rider.
CMU is scheduled to partake in the Cleveland State Open, the National Duals and the Midlands before the calendar flips to 2022.
The Chippewa Challenge is a quad slated for Jan. 16. CMU will welcome American, Cal State Bakersfield and Campbell, each of which is coached by former Chippewa wrestlers Jason Borrelli (American), Luke Smith (CSU Bakersfield) and Scotti Sentes (Campbell).
Jason Borrelli is Tom Borrelli's son; all three wrestled for Tom Borrelli as collegians and Smith and Jason Borrelli both served as graduate assistants in the CMU program.
"I think it's pretty unique and it's pretty neat that we have three Division I head coaches that wrestled here," Tom Borrelli said. "I don't know if that's going to happen very many places."
The Journeyman Open, which is scheduled for Manheim, Pa., features a unique pool format, while the Chippewas will find themselves among the best in the nation at the National Duals. The field includes Iowa, Penn State, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Northern Iowa, Missouri, Arizona State, Oregon State, Cornell, Lehigh, and Hofstra.
"Six or seven of those teams will be in the top 10," Borrelli said.
The Chippewas are scheduled to entertain Ohio, Buffalo and Michigan in dual meets ahead of the MAC Championships, which are scheduled for March 4-5 at Ohio. The NCAA Championships are scheduled for March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
The Chippewas finished 5-2 in duals in 2021, second in the MAC Championships, and 22nd at the NCAA Championships. Missouri, which won every MAC Championships title since joining the league in 2012-13, has moved back to the Big 12.
"Our nonconference schedule is very challenging, and I think the MAC is really up for grabs this year without Missouri being in the MAC. It's going to make the conference very competitive."
