MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- After falling in three sets on Thursday, the Central Michigan volleyball team made a second attempt to knock off undefeated Bowling Green on Saturday, but struggled late and fell in straight sets to the defending Mid-American Conference champion.
Â
The loss dropped the Chippewas to 2-6 in the MAC, 8-12 overall, while the Falcons improved to 12-6, 8-0, maintaining the No. 1 spot both in the MAC West and the overall standings. CMU is scheduled to travel to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan Wednesday (6 p.m.) in a MAC match.
Â
CMU coach Mike Gawlik said that his team played two good sets, the first two, against the Falcons on Saturday whereas the Chippewas had found their rhythm in the third set in Thursday's loss.
Â
"I said (to the team) that we have to find a way to close out some of those close sets," Gawlik said. "We were in a position to win set one, we were leading late and let that one kind of slip away; in set two we were trading points back and forth, we let that one slip away, but we were in striking distance.
Â
"When you're playing against a team that's separated themselves from the MAC in the last year and a half, that shooting star doesn't glimmer for very long; you've got to jump on it when you see it."
Â
The Chippewas kept the Falcons on their toes in sets one and two with strong defense. Lengthy rallies in the first set kept CMU and BGSU locked up for most of the set, tying the score 17 times before Bowling Green claimed the set victory at 27-25. The second set played out similarly with Bowling Green winning 25-22.
Â
The Falcons jumped to a 6-1 start in the third set prior to a CMU lineup swap, resulting in senior Hannah Warners steppping in at libero. Warners maintained the receiving pressure freshman libero Aly Gurtiza had put forth in the first two sets, but Bowling Green's momentum continued to roll forward. Despite the Chippewas' successful runs in effort to turn the tables, CMU succumbed, 25-19.
Â
The Falcons put up a .302 hitting percentage for the match while holding the Chippewas to a .152.
Â
Sierra Gray led the Chippewa offense with 10 kills; Savannah Thompson followed with nine to pair with a team-leading 18 digs, while four other Chippewas finished with five or more kills.
Â
Setters Grace Butler and Kamryn Olson put up 15 and nine assists, respectively.
