Men's Basketball Falls At DePaul

CHICAGO – The Central Michigan men's basketball team was outscored by 30 points in the second half on Saturday in falling to DePaul, 99-66, in a nonconference game at Wintrust Arena.
The Chippewas (0-2) are scheduled to play at Eastern Illinois on Monday (8 p.m.).
Aundre Polk scored 11 points to lead CMU, while Brian Taylor, Oscar Lopez Jr., and Jermaine Jackson Jr. added 10 each.
CMU trailed just 41-38 after a competitive first half and were down, 56-52, with under 14 minutes to play.
DePaul then surged, mounting a 23-2 run over a five-minute span to take command, 79-54, with under nine minutes remaining.
"We've got to be able to put two halves together," first-year CMU coach Tony Barbee said. "I thought we did a good job of fighting, competing, and battling in the first half. The second half not so much.
"Their size kind of overwhelmed us. We got outrebounded and the points-in-the-paint discrepancy was the difference in the game."
The Blue Demons (2-0) outrebounded the Chippewas,
46-27, and finished with a 48-26 advantage in points in the paint.
CMU made 46.4 percent of its first-half field goal attempts but slipped to 30 percent in the final 20 minutes.
"Just disappointed in the lack of spirit, lack of fight in the second half," Barbee said. "I thought we just let go of the rope a little bit. We're working too hard in practice, the guys are competing too hard in practice that they can't let go of the rope no matter the situation, no matter the score.
"And we can't let one run by the other team end the game. … We've got to be better."
After CMU plays at Eastern Illinois, it will have a week off to prepare for the Good Sam Empire Classic in Las Vegas. The Chippewas will face top-ranked Gonzaga on Monday, Nov. 22, and then will play Bellarmine the following night.
CMU opened with a 10-point loss at Missouri, the first of seven-consecutive away-from-home contests to start the season. They are also slated to play at Kentucky and at Xavier before their Dec. 5 home opener against Western Illinois.
"It's a tough stretch," Barbee said. "Seven straight games on the road – it's tough and I knew it would be on this new team. But that's why I put them out there so they can learn, and we can grow from it."
Eastern Illinois (0-2) opened with an 80-56 loss at Northwestern and then fell on Friday at Saint Louis, 86-44.
