NICEVILLE, Fla. – Central Michigan wrestlers won six of the first seven matches on Tuesday in downing Binghamton, 26-16, in the Chippewas' third and final meet at the Journeyman Collegiate Duals at Northwest Florida State College.
The Chippewas (2-2) bounced back after falling on Monday to No. 17 Lehigh and top-ranked Iowa to finish in fifth place in their six-team pool. CMU's next competition is the prestigious Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Dec. 29-30.
"I know our guys were sore and they were a little bit beat up (after Monday)," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "I felt like we bounced back from the disappointment today which was good to see."
CMU got a technical fall victory from Brock Bergelin (125 pounds) in the opening bout against Binghamton and then got decision wins from Dresden Simon (141), Corbyn Munson (149) and Bret Fedewa (174).
CMU also won by forfeit at 133 and Johnny Lovett won his 157-pound match by injury default.
Fedewa's victory at 174 gave the Chippewas an insurmountable 26-4 lead.
The Chippewas were without 285-pounder Matt Stencel, a two-time All-American and four-time Mid-American Conference champion, who was injured in Monday's dual against Iowa.
The Chippewas opened the tournament with a 25-6 loss to Lehigh. And while CMU won just two of the 10 matches in the dual, the Chippewas lost seven matches by two points or less, and two of those losses went to overtime.
Then, they immediately were tasked with taking on the No. 1 team in the country in the defending national champion Hawkeyes.
"The tough part for us in this tournament is that we wrestled pretty hard against Lehigh and we just weren't fortunate enough in some of the (close) matches with them," Borrelli said. "If we flip some of those one- or two-point matches then things are a lot different. We wrestled hard it just didn't go our way.
"Then we have to wrestle Iowa. We were the guys who got sent to the lions a little bit. That was a little discouraging. We just aren't quite ready to wrestle two hard matches against quality teams back to back like that."
