Stencel's pin, Simon's comeback win highlight 24-12 victory
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Matt Stencel recorded a pin and Central Michigan won six of 10 matches on Friday in posting a 24-12 Mid-American Conference wrestling dual victory over Rider at McGuirk Arena.
It was the first dual of the season for the Chippewas, who earlier this season competed in the Michigan State Open and the Journeymen Classic in Pennsylvania. Rider is 1-2, 1-1 MAC.
"This was a tough task for us," veteran CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "Rider has a good program, good team. They've wrestled Purdue, they've wrestled Northern Illinois already. I knew it wasn't going to be perfect (for us)."
Not perfect, but it rarely is in the first dual of the season. Still, the Chippewas were plenty good in holding off the Broncs, who were third last March in the MAC Championships while CMU was second.
Stencel, CMU's longtime standout at 285 pounds who is ranked 11th nationally, posted his 53rd career pin. It came in the first period, and it capped a stretch in which the Chippewas won five of six matches as they built a 21-6 lead.
The meet began at 149 and, after Rider won the opening bout by decision for a 3-0 lead, CMU's Johnny Lovett posted a 6-2 win to even the dual at 3-3. CMU's Tracy Hubbard (165) followed with an injury-default victory and then the Chippewas' Bret Fedewa (174) took a 9-6 win to increase the advantage to 12-3.
Rider won at 184 to close to 12-6 before CMU got a 10-4 win from Aaron Bolo at 197 and then Stencel's pin.
CMU's other victory came in the final match of the night (141) when eighth-ranked Dresden Simon came back from 6-0 and 7-2 deficits to post a 10-8 win, scoring eight points in the third period.
"I felt like that was inspirational to our whole team," Borrelli said of Simon's win. "When something like that happens it gives your team belief in themselves, belief in what we're doing, belief in their training, that type of thing."
Fedewa's victory was particularly gratifying because he has wrestled just twice in the past two seasons as he recovered from a devastating leg injury. The senior from DeWitt scored a first-period takedown and never trailed. Leading 7-6 in the third period, he scored a late escape and then added a riding-time point.
"I guess mentally being away for a while and not getting all of those matches can be mentally tough," Fedewa said. "But I'm always ready to compete. It's a step in the right direction and it's just trying to get better every match toward the end of the season because that's what's really important."
Bolo, a senior from Iron Mountain, made the most of his first career opportunity to wrestle in a dual. His 10-4 win came over graduate student Matt Correnti, who finished fourth last season at 197 in the MAC Championships and was an NCAA Championships qualifier when he wrestled at Rutgers in 2017.
Bolo fell behind, 2-0, in the first period, and then got two near falls – one a four-pointer, the other a two-pointer – in the second period in building an 8-2 lead.
"Fedewa, that's a big win for him," Borrelli said. "He's been out of commission for two years. It's real important that he gains confidence. Same with Bolo. That was a big win for Aaron."
The Chippewas are scheduled to compete on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Cleveland State Open and then will partake in the National Duals in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. on Dec. 20-21. They are scheduled to face three teams including No. 1-ranked Iowa and No. 22 Lehigh.
