Chippewas Notch 12 Top 10s At Big Meet

CMU flexes its muscle in the throwing events
ALLENDALE, Mich. – Quiara Wheeler won the weight throw to lead a strong performance in the event and lead the Central Michigan track & field team at the Grand Valley State Big Meet at the Lakers' Kelly Family Sports Center.
The Chippewas notched 12 top-10 finishes in the meet, the final tuneup ahead of the Feb. 26-27 Mid-American Conference Championships, which the Chippewas will host at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track.
Wheeler, who set the program record (21.51 meters) in the weight throw a week ago and is ranked sixth nationally, was one of three Chippewas to place in the top 10 in the event. CMU's Maya Bennett was fifth (18.63) and Marissa Dunn was 10th (17.85).
CMU has two top-10 finishes in the other throwing event, the shot put. Erin Howard placed second (14.88) and Rebecca Herman was ninth (13.70).
CMU sophomore Reghan Draper and freshman Kaitlynn Rush placed third and sixth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. Draper finished in 7.62, while Rush clocked in at 7.67.
The Chippewas got a sixth-place finish from Kasey Staley in the pole vault (3.87 meters) and a seventh-place finish from their 4x400-relay team (3:54.86). Peyton Korytkowski, Taylor Korytkowski, Emma Francis and Emma Fountain comprised the relay squad.
CMU's Emma Fountain and Alexa Davis finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Fountain finished in 2:13.73; Davis in 2:13.75. Chippewa freshman Sarah Daniel was seventh in the long jump (5.53 meters).
