MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team returns to action this weekend with a four-game nonconference series at Dayton.
The Chippewas and Flyers open the series at Dayton's Woerner Field on Friday (3 p.m.). They're scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (noon) and conclude the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
CMU is 5-5 and last weekend took two of three games from No. 23 West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va. The Chippewas have won five of their last seven games since dropping three in their season-opening series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Flyers are 3-11 and were swept in a four-game series last weekend by North Dakota State.
On the Mound
CMU coach Jordan Bischel will send sophomore Jordan Patty (1-0, 5.63 earned run average) to the mound for Friday's series opener. Redshirt freshman Andrew Taylor (2-1, 0.49) is scheduled to start the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, while senior Cameron Brown (1-0, 6.43) is slated to start the nightcap. Senior J.T. Rogoszewski (0-1, 10.29) is Sunday's scheduled starter. All four are right-handers.
Taylor was named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance in CMU's 12-4 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. He struck out 11 over 6 1/3 scoreless innings and has allowed just one run in 18 1/3 innings this season.
His 0.49 ERA is the best in the MAC and his 25 strikeouts rank him second in the league.
At the Plate
Senior Zach Gilles had six hits in 11 at-bats in the West Virginia series, raising his batting average to a team-best .419 and extending his hit streak to eight games.
Sophomore Justin Simpson, who is in his first season at CMU after transferring from Golden West (Calif.) College, is second on the team with a .364 batting average. Redshirt freshman Jakob Marsee is hitting .310 with nine RBI and six extra-base hits, both team highs.
