Final Week, And They're All Big For Volleyball Team

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Final week of the regular season, and it's critical for the Central Michigan volleyball team.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday (6 p.m.) and then are slated to close the regular season home with two matches against Miami (Ohio), the first on Friday (6 p.m.) and the second on Saturday (2 p.m.).
The top four teams based on win percentage in the conference standings make the Mid-American Conference Tournament, which will be at Bowling Green. The Falcons, who are 18-0, have already clinched the regular-season championship. Second-place Western Michigan (14-4) has wrapped up a tournament berth.
That leaves two tournament spots and CMU (10-9) is one of five teams in a tight race down the stretch. Heading into Tuesday's games, Kent State (.666 winning percentage) is third, followed by Ohio (.562), Miami (Ohio) (.555), CMU (.526), and Ball State (.444).
"To get to the tournament, we have to win out, I'm almost for sure on that," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "There's a lot of teams right in the mix. More than rooting for other teams and more than rooting for a certain number of things to happen, first and foremost we've got to take care of our games and Tuesday is that focus for us."
Last Time Out
The Chippewas split two matches at Ball State over the weekend, dropping the opener in five sets and then winning the finale in four.
Savannah Thompson had 21 kills in leading the Chippewas to the Saturday win. She was one of four Chippewas to reach double digits in kills. CMU also had five players reach double digits in digs.
The highlight in Friday's match came from freshman Kamryn Olson, who posted a triple-double with 11 kills, 22 assists and 11 digs.
