MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team is set to open Mid-American Conference play with a four-game series this weekend at Ohio.
The Chippewas and Bobcats begin the series on Friday (6 p.m.) and are set to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) and wrap up on Sunday (1 p.m.).
CMU is 8-6 on the season and has won eight of its last 11 games. The Chippewas took three of four last weekend at Dayton, outscoring the Flyers, 33-11, in the final three games. Ohio is 7-7, 1-3 MAC, having opened league play last weekend by dropping three of four at home to Bowling Green.
CMU senior Zach Gilles was named the MAC Player of the Week for his performance in the Chippewas' series last weekend at Dayton. He hit .583 and drove in 10 runs in the series. He also scored four runs and finished the weekend with a .722 on-base percentage.
Gilles is hitting a MAC-best .500 (20-for-40) on the season.
As a team, the Chippewas rank second in the MAC with a .282 batting average and are fourth with a 4.44 earned run average. Ohio is third in the league with a .259 batting average and its pitching staff is fifth with a 4.46 ERA.
The Chippewas rank second in the MAC in runs scored (102) despite only hitting one home run this year. A major reason for this success is CMU's .437 on-base percentage, the third-best mark in the nation.
Three of the top four players in the MAC in on-base percentage are Chippewas. Gilles (.667) is first, Justin Simpson (.532) is second, and Drew Lechnir (.500) is fourth. Five of the top 10 in the MAC in walks are Chippewas, led by Gilles, who is first with 18.
CMU redshirt freshman right-hander Andrew Taylor is tied for second in the MAC with a 1.11 ERA, shares the league lead with three wins (against one loss) and 39 strikeouts.
