Softball Heads To First-Place Miami For 4-Game Series

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team is headed to Miami (Ohio) for a Mid-American Conference softball series beginning on Friday (3 p.m.).
The Chippewas and RedHawks are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) and then close the series on Sunday (noon).
CMU is 4-9, 2-2 MAC after splitting its league-opening four-game series last weekend at Bowling Green. The Chippewas were shutout in game 1 of the series but rebounded to take two of the final three games in the series. The Chippewas collected 23 hits in the final three games at Bowling Green.
Freshman Grace Lehto struck out nine in throwing a complete game in CMU's 5-2 victory in the series finale. Lehto (3-5) has struck out 49 in 43 1/3 innings and has compiled a 3.55 earned run average.
Senior shortstop Morgan Gardner leads the Chippewas with a .387 batting average, while freshman outfielder Abbey Tolmie is second on the team at .310 and senior centerfielder Shaidan Knapp, CMU's leadoff hitter, is hitting .306 with a team-best .444 on-base percentage.
Knapp hit her team-leading second homer of the season in Sunday's win at Bowling Green.
The RedHawks, the 2019 MAC regular-season champions, are 12-6 overall, 4-0 MAC. They opened league play last weekend by sweeping Western Michigan, outscoring the Broncos 40-2. They are in first place in the league.
Miami's Courtney Vierstra was named the MAC Pitcher of the Week after picking up three victories in the RedHawks' sweep of Western. She is 7-2 with a 3.18 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings on the season.
