KIRKWOOD, Mo. – The Central Michigan golf team had a rough go of it on Monday during the first two rounds of the Southern Illinois Diane Daugherty Invitational at Greenbriar Hills Country Club.
The Chippewas shot a first-round 326 and followed with a 332 for a 658 36-hole total. They stand in 15th place in the 16-team field. The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
"We struggled today," coach Jim Earle said. "We're playing on a tough golf course and we didn't have our 'A' game. This game can humble even the best of players and, for us, that may not necessarily be a bad thing. We'll learn from this and take those lessons going forward. We need to play smarter and putt considerably better both tomorrow and for the remainder of the season in order to be competitive."
The Chippewas are playing without two of their top players, sophomore Claudia Salvador and freshman Ashley Goh. Salvador opted out of the season and Goh was injured in a tournament last weekend. In addition, the Chippewas lost another player, Jami Laude, to injury after the first round on Monday.
Freshman Rachel Kauflin shot 78-82—160 to lead the Chippewas on Monday. She is in 38th place in the 88-player field.
Also for the Chippewas, Zoe Vartyan shot 84-80—164, Meghan Deardorff shot 82-82—164, and Padgett Chitty shot 83-88—171.
Arkansas State shot 301-304—605 and leads the tournament by nine shots over Illinois State (305-309—614).
Taylor Ledwein of Bradley shot 67-78—145 and holds a two-shot lead over Akari Hayashi of South Dakota and Haeri Lee of Drake on the individual leaderboard.
