Chippewas scheduled to play 6 games in 3 days
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Leesburg, Fla. is the weekend destination of the Central Michigan softball team, which is scheduled to play six games over three days in the Sunshine State.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play New Mexico State in their first game of the weekend at 11 a.m. on Friday. CMU is slated to play South Dakota on Friday afternoon, and then on Saturday is scheduled to take on North Dakota and Stetson. CMU wraps up the weekend with the two games on Sunday, the first against Middle Tennessee and the second against South Dakota.
The Chippewas are 1-2 after last weekend's season-opening trip to the Tennessee Invitational. CMU opened with a 7-4 victory over Northern Kentucky and then dropped two to the host Volunteers, 9-0 and 3-0.
Among the many bright spots for CMU during its three games in Tennessee was the pitching of freshman Grace Lehto, who emerged from the weekend 1-1 with a 3.77 earned run average. She went the distance in both of her starts, allowing seven runs on 13 hits, walking five and striking out 13.
Senior shortstop Morgan Gardner had four hits in the three games in Tennessee and carries a team-best .444 batting average. Freshman Abbey Tolmie had a hit in each of CMU's three games and is hitting .375, while junior Shannon Stein provided a highlight right out of the chute, homering in the top of the first in the opener against Northern Kentucky on just the second pitch to a Chippewa this season.
After the weekend trip to Florida, the Chippewas' schedule features only Mid-American Conference outside of a nonleague game at Notre Dame, set for March 31.
CMU is scheduled to open MAC play with a March 19-21 trip to Bowling Green for a four-game series. League teams are scheduled to play 40 conference games this season, most of which will comprise four-game weekend series.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play mid-week doubleheaders in home-and-home series with Western Michigan and with Toledo.
