RICHMOND, Va. – Lots of base runners, plenty of hits and runs.

VCU used a six-run sixth inning on Saturday in seizing the lead and then held off Central Michigan in handing the Chippewas a 12-11 nonconference baseball loss at The Diamond.

The Chippewas (0-4) are scheduled to play a doubleheader at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., on Sunday (noon).

Saturday's game featured 22 hits, nine extra-base hits, 22 walks, 20 runners left on base, and took nearly four hours to complete.

CMU's Griffin Lockwood-Powell highlighted a four-run CMU first inning with a three-run home run, the first this season by a Chippewa.

Lockwood-Powell and Zach Gilles each had an RBI single during the Chippewas' three-run sixth as they took an 8-5 lead only to see VCU (4-5) bat around in scoring six runs on four hits – a solo homer, two doubles and a triple – in the bottom half of the inning.

The Chippewas got two back in the seventh to draw to 12-10. Kade Preston had an RBI single and freshman Jakob Marsee drove in a run with a two-out double on an 0-2 pitch.

CMU drew three walks to load the bases in the ninth and got a run on a Camilletti groundout. The Chippewas stranded two runners in scoring position.

Marsee doubled, tripled and drove in four runs, while Garrett Navarra tripled, and Lockwood-Powell and Gilles finished with two hits apiece.

Ryan Palmblad (0-1) took the loss in relief of starter Jordan Patty. Patty allowed five runs on six hits, while Palmblad surrendered four runs on three hits. Grant Frazer and Logan Buczkowski also pitched in relief for the Chippewas.

Tyler Davis, the second of six VCU pitchers, earned the win. Michael Haydak and Tyler Locklear homered for the Rams.
