LEESBURG, Fla. – Freshman Grace Lehto tossed a complete game and got plenty of offensive support on Saturday as the Central Michigan softball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Stetson at Sleepy Hollow Complex.
The win capped a long day for CMU, which was scheduled to play two games, the first against North Dakota at 1:30 p.m., the second against Stetson at 4 p.m. Rain pushed the start times to 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., respectively.
The Chippewas dropped a 6-5 decision to North Dakota in their first game.
Lehto (2-2) struck out nine, walked three and surrendered five hits against Stetson (2-6).
CMU (2-5) scored all five of its runs in the third inning, collecting four hits in batting around. Michaleigh Vallimont and Kelsey Alexander each had an RBI double, Shaidan Knapp ripped a two-run single, and Samantha Mills had an RBI single.
Stetson got its runs on a two-run double from Lizzie Shubert in the sixth. Lehto settled down to retire three consecutive batters, two by strikeout, to end the threat. Lehto pitched out of a two-on jam in the seventh, getting a strikeout to end the game.
Against North Dakota (4-6), freshman Abbey Tolmie had a two-run double and finished with three RBI to lead the Chippewas, and Shannon Stein and Mills each drove in a run.
Cloe Mallory went four innings in her first start of the season for the Chippewas. Faith Howe pitched in relief.
The Chippewas are scheduled to close their weekend in Florida with two games on Sunday, the first against South Dakota at 10 a.m., the second against Middle Tennessee at 12:30 p.m.
