MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team returns to Mid-American Conference play this weekend when it entertains Ball State at Margo Jonker Stadium.
It is the home-opening weekend for CMU and the first game at Margo Jonker Stadium for second-year Chippewa coach McCall Salmon and 17 of the players on the Chippewas' 29-player roster.
It has been 706 days since the Chippewas played a game on their home diamond and they will play at home on each of the next three weekends. They are scheduled to entertain Northern Illinois from April 16-18 and Buffalo from April 23-25.
CMU is 4-14, 2-6 after being swept in a four-game league series last weekend at MAC-leading Miami (Ohio). The Chippewas dropped a 7-4 nonleaguer on Wednesday at Notre Dame. In that game, Shannon Stein hit a pair of two-run home runs to lead CMU's seven-hit attack.
Stein leads the Chippewas in homers with three and in runs batted in (10).
Senior Morgan Gardner had two hits and scored twice in Wednesday's loss at Notre Dame. She raised her batting average to a team-best .386. She also leads the CMU regulars in both slugging percentage (.477) and on-base percentage (.400).
Freshman Grace Lehto has made a team-high 11 appearances in the circle. She is 3-7 with a 4.83 ERA in 53 2/3 innings.
Ball State is 10-9, 4-0 MAC after sweeping Bowling Green in its league-opening series last weekend. The Cardinals rank third in the league in team batting average (.302) and fourth in team ERA (4.31).
