Three Firsts For Track & Field At Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Central Michigan track & field team posted three wins among a number of good finishes on Saturday at the Oakland Golden Grizzly Invitational at Oakland Track & Field.
CMU's victories came from Brook Boes in the discus, Sarah Griffin in the pole vault, and Lauren Beckmann in the 1,500-meter run.
Griffin, a freshman, won the pole vault at 3.80 meters, putting her in the neighborhood of teammate Kasey Staley, who did not compete on Saturday but is ranked third in the Mid-American Conference in the event.
"Sarah probably had the performance of the day," CMU coach Jenny Swieton said. "She had a pretty big PR and that puts her up there pretty high in the rankings as far as the MAC. She looked really, really good. It's nice to have somebody up there with (Staley) in that event. That was really exciting."
Boes, one of a number of Chippewa youngsters competing for the first time in an outdoor collegiate meet, won the discus with a toss of 43.68 meters; Beckmann finished the 1,500 in 4:34.04, a personal best.
"We had a ton of PRs and some really great performances," Swieton said. "Everybody who went competed hard and ran really, really well. We had a ton of top-five performances. It was a really good day for us. A lot of people stepped up.
"I think the biggest thing today was that the people who have been performing well continued to do so, and we had new names and new people step up to add to our depth as we look to the conference meet. We're getting deeper and deeper every week, which is really exciting."
Also for CMU, Alyssa Vandegriff and Lindsey Clarke placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles; Emma Fountain was second and Alexa Davis fifth in the 400-meter dash; Emma Francis was second and Anna Laurenz was third in the 400 hurdles; Davis placed eighth in the 800-meter run; Morgan Merlino finished sixth in the 1,500; Anya Turner was third in the steeplechase; Emily Paupore was second, Ashlyn Nagel sixth, and Natalie Newcombe seventh in the 5,000; Laurenz was fifth in the javelin; Vandegriff was fourth and Clarke was sixth in the long jump; and Shelby Korytkowski was eighth in the pole vault.
