Baseball Can't Climb Out Of Early Deficit Against No. 10 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Central Michigan baseball team fell into an early deficit and never recovered on Tuesday, falling to 10th-ranked Notre Dame, 8-4, in a nonconference game at the Fighting Irish's Frank Eck Stadium.
It was just the second loss in the last 11 games for CMU (17-10), which returns to Mid-American Conference play this weekend when it entertains Kent State in a four-game series at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
Notre Dame scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead that it would never relinquish. After the Chippewas got two back in the second, the Irish tacked on a combined five runs in the second, third and fourth innings, extending their lead to 8-2.
CMU matched its season high with three errors, two of which came in the first inning. The Chippewas left the bases loaded in the second inning and again in the seventh, stranding 12 baserunners in total.
"I could certainly walk away and talk about some sort of a moral victory because we were way down early and we pitched better as the game went on and had some good at-bats in the ninth inning and did some good things, but we're kind of beyond that as a program," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "When we take the field, we want to play our best baseball and see if it's good enough to win and we just didn't.
"Give Notre Dame credit, obviously they're a good team. But it's been a long time since we had a game that we did not attack the strike zone and we just did not do that early in the game."
CMU starter J.T. Rogoszewski (1-2) allowed four runs on five hits over two innings in taking the loss. The Chippewas used seven pitchers and the bullpen held Notre Dame to one run on two hits from the fourth inning on.
"We came in with a plan to only have (Rogoszewski) go a couple of innings because we wanted to use a lot of guys," Bischel said. "We've done that in midweek games in the past and it's really beneficial for those guys. Coming out of it some of those guys come away with a good boost of confidence and they showed some good things that help prepare them for the weekend and other guys came out with things to work on."
"Certainly, the second half of the game we played pretty well. You've got to play nine good innings if you want to win (on) any day; doesn't matter if you're playing Notre Dame or the New York Yankees or a Little League team, you've got to play good baseball and we just were not very sharp today for whatever reason."
Zach Heeke led the Chippewas with two hits including a two-run single in the ninth inning. The Chippewas got their second-inning runs on a Drew Stengren RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Jakob Marsee.
