Patty Superb, Marsee Hits Towering Blast As Chippewas Win Series Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Jakob Marsee hit a three-run homer and Jordan Patty continued to dominate on the mound as the Central Michigan baseball team rolled past Kent State, 10-0, on Friday in the opener of a four-game Mid-American Conference series at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas improved to 18-10, 10-3 MAC. Kent State is 13-15, 6-7. The game was called after 6 ½ innings because of the run rule. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Theunissen.
Patty, a junior right-hander, allowed six hits, walked one and struck out a career-high 11 in going the distance. He ran his scoreless innings streak to 25 2/3 in improving to 4-1 and lowering his earned run average to 2.19.
He surrendered back-to-back infield singles to open the game, then got three straight outs, the last of which came on a highlight reel over-the-shoulder catch by Marsee while running into the wall in right field.
Patty settled in after that and set down 12 Golden Flashes in a row until surrendering a two-out single in the sixth inning. At that point, CMU led 10-0.
"He gets out there, he attacks hitters, we get the ball in play and we play really good defense behind him," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said of Patty, who has struck out 29 and walked just seven in his last four starts. "They hit some balls hard but when you make a team string together a bunch of hits it's not easy."
The Chippewas collected 13 hits, 11 of which came off of Kent State starter Luke Albright (5-3), one of the premier pitchers in the MAC who on Wednesday was named, along with CMU's Andrew Taylor, to the midseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, which goes to the top amateur player in the country.
"The key there was nine guys giving quality at-bats," Bischel said. "All nine guys had competitive at-bats and when you do that it makes life tough on a pitcher."
The Chippewas knocked Albright out of the game with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by Marsee's towering three-run blast over the 20-foot-high wall 400 feet from home plate in center field.
It was the second home run of the season for Marsee, a left-handed-hitting redshirt freshmen. His first homer was a grand slam at Ohio on March 27. Marsee also doubled and has six hits in his last 12 at-bats.
"He's still developing, he's still got a lot of room to improve," Bischel said. "He's making strides and we think he's just going to keep getting better and obviously that showed up today."
The top six batters in CMU's lineup combined for 11 hits as the Chippewas had baserunners galore in every inning.
"That's kind of a blueprint for how we want to play the game," Bischel said. "We want to attack hitters and play good defense, we did that; we want to pressure (the opponent) through good at-bats combined with good baserunning and hard-hit balls and good bunting; we did those things.
"We played our style of baseball and it paid off. Now the challenge becomes, when you play four games in a weekend, none of those runs get saved for (Saturday) and we go back to square one against a very good team tomorrow."
