FORT WORTH, Texas – Central Michigan's Hannah DeMers scored a 9.8125 on bars and Morgan Tong posted a 9.750 on the beam on Friday at the NCAA National Championships at Dickies Arena.
DeMers, a sophomore, and Tong, a junior, finished 24th in their respective events after qualifying as individuals two weeks ago at the regional in Athens, Ga. It was the first trip to college gymnastics' biggest stage for both.
"Overall, I don't believe the scores were indicative of how great their routines were," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "They both showed great poise and confidence, and they really did a great job. Both hit their routines and it was great to see them in that atmosphere."
DeMers and Tong rotated with Utah, one of four teams that competed in the session.
"Without your team it is a different flow, but I thought they both handled that experience tremendously well," MacDonald said.
Both, along with the vast majority of the Chippewas on the roster, are expected to return next season and the experience of having qualified for, and competed in, the national championship will do nothing but serve them, and the entire program, well, MacDonald said.
"I hope that they take away from it a trust in the process, and the belief that preparation equals success," she said. "That's something we preach day in and day out in the gym – attention to detail and consistency. I really hope that they take those words to heart and continue to reinforce that in not only their gymnastics but our team's gymnastics."
