Chippewas entertain Western Michigan in MAC twinbill on Wednesday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Buffalo built an early eight-run lead in handing Central Michigan a 10-1 loss on Sunday in the finale of a four-game Mid-American Conference softball series at Margo Jonker Stadium.
The teams split the series. The Chippewas, 9-21, 7-13 MAC, are scheduled to entertain Western Michigan, 10-20, 6-10, in a MAC doubleheader on Wednesday (1 p.m.) at Margo Jonker Stadium.
"I think we're definitely going in a positive direction," CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "We've dealt with some injuries and looking ahead we'll have (pitcher) Kaitlyn Bean back for Wednesday's doubleheader.
"Today was the first time in the last two weeks that we had everyone on our roster in the dugout so that was nice to see. We know we've got to be better in certain areas and we're going to keep fine-tuning those areas. Looking forward to competing again on Wednesday against Western."
Buffalo got a three-run homer and a three-run double during a seven-run second inning in putting the Chippewas into a deep hole. The game was called after five innings on the run rule.
"If we could have scored a couple and answered after that big seven-run inning, it could have been a difference maker," CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "They were the better team today. They made great defensive plays again. We had runners in scoring position; we left five on base. It's that consistent execution with runners in scoring position."
Caitlyn Britton took the loss. Grace Lehto started and Cloe Mallory worked in relief.
Britton, a sophomore, accounted for CMU's lone run with a fourth-inning home run. She went 6-for-12 with two home runs, a double and five RBI in the series.
"She's staying calm," Salmon said. "She knows when she stays calm, she's able to perform to the best of her abilities. Any time you get comfortable in the box good things are going to happen and she just looks really comfortable right now."
