Karlen Shines As Lacrosse Bounces Back

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Natalie Karlen continued to rewrite the Central Michigan lacrosse record book and the Chippewas rebounded from a tough loss with a 19-9 Mid-American Conference victory on Tuesday over Kent State at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Karlen scored eight goals and added three assists for 11 points as the Chippewas bounced back from their Saturday loss at Robert Morris to improve to 7-6, 5-2 MAC.
"What we told them today is that you have 240 minutes," CMU coach Sara Tisdale, referring to the number of minutes in CMU's four remaining games. "The rest of the season is in your control, and what do you want? What do you want the lacrosse community, the MAC, to know about you? And they met the challenge today.
"Unfortunately, we didn't get the job done at Robert Morris and that took things (in the MAC race) out of our control. Proud of them, proud of Natalie. It was a lot of fun today. Everybody smiled for 60 minutes."
Karlen, a senior from Hagerstown, Md., set three program season records and tied another on Tuesday.
• Her eight goals gave her 55 for the year, breaking the previous mark (49) set by Jocelyne Lemay in 2017.
• Her 11 points upped her season total to 71, nine better than Riley Huda's previous program high-water mark (62) set in 2017.
• Her 11 shots upped her season total to 109, topping the previous standard (103) that she set in 2019. All 11 of her shots were shots on goal, giving her 80 for the season and tying her own program mark which she set in '19.
Karlen has 162 career goals, one shy of Lemay's CMU mark of 163. She is the program's career leader in points (232), shots (362), and shots on goal (269).
"Natalie's made me a better coach," Tisdale said. "She's challenged me, she's challenged her teammates; she's a competitor and she holds herself to a high standard. She goes out and she really competes every single day.
"I think if you gave her an extra year of eligibility her body physically wouldn't be able to do it because she has left it all on the field. I'm proud that her name is on the top of our record board."
The Chippewas set team records on Tuesday with 46 shots and 39 shots on goal.
Audrey Whiteside added four goals and Maggie Diebold had two. Sierra Savage made seven saves in 47-plus minutes in the Chippewa goal.
CMU's Tyra Prince scored with 17:09 left in the first half to break a 5-5 tie and Sophia Chong-Ahmed found the back of the net about five minutes later to up the lead to 7-5.
The Chippewas never trailed after that and they scored 10-consecutive goals, the last by Makenna Huhn with 17:06 remaining, to increase their lead to 17-6.
