Softball Splits At Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Central Michigan scored four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning on Wednesday to post a 5-2 victory over Toledo in the opener of a Mid-American Conference softball doubleheader at the Rockets' Scott Park.
The Rockets rebounded to win the nightcap, 2-1, and gain a split of the twinbill and the season series. The teams split a doubleheader last week in Mount Pleasant.
The loss in the nightcap ended CMU's win streak at a season-long six games. The Chippewas are 17-27, 15-19 MAC; Toledo is 27-22, 17-16.
CMU closes the season with a four-game MAC series this weekend with Ohio at Margo Jonker Stadium. The opener is set for Friday (3 p.m.).
Game 1
The Chippewas trailed, 2-1, entering the seventh inning. Kelsey Alexander led off with a single and then Skylar Coberley reached on a bunt.
Emily Bracamonte bunted Alexander and Coberley up a base, and then Alexander scored to tie the game, 2-2, on a Samantha Mills single. Abbey Tolmie followed with another run-scoring single to put the Chippewas up, 3-2, and then Shannon Stein delivered a two-run single for the final margin.
"That's the first time all year that we've rallied like that in the seventh inning," CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "I think how we stayed composed shows our growth. Hits are contagious and we made plays and executed efficiently and that was good to see."
Kaitlyn Bean (3-9) went the distance for the win. She allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four. She got a double play with two on and none out in the bottom of the seventh and then got the game's final out on a fly ball.
The Chippewas were without one of their top pitchers, Grace Lehto, who missed the game because of illness.
"She threw well, she stayed composed," Salmon said of Bean. "Our defense made a couple big plays and we stayed clean. Proud of her today. We're shorthanded with (Lehto) being sick and (Bean) gave us everything she had in getting the complete-game win."
Mills finished with two hits and two RBI. It was the first multi-hit game of the season for the junior catcher. Tolmie also had two hits.
Game 2
CMU seized a 1-0 lead on Kelsey Alexander's RBI single in the second inning, and the Rockets answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning with two unearned runs.
After a leadoff infield single, the Chippewas committed a throwing error on a bunt, leaving runners at first and third with none out. After back-to-back strikeouts, Aleah Marra doubled to plate both runs and put the Rockets ahead for good.
It was the Chippewas' lone error of the day.
CMU stranded seven baserunners, including four in scoring position, and twice it had runners thrown out at the plate.
Cloe Mallory (3-5) started and took the loss. She allowed two runs (none earned) on five hits and struck out four over four innings. Caitlyn Britton surrendered just one hit in working the final two frames.
"They complemented what Bean was able to do in game 1," Salmon said. "Both were hitting their spots well; the strike zone was in favor of what they throw and the location where their pitches tend to go. I think Britton went down 3-0 to a couple batters and fought her way back to get outs. I was happy with both of them. They gave us an opportunity to stay in the game."
Shaidan Knapp led the Chippewas with three hits including a double, and Tolmie singled to extended her hitting streak to seven games, which coincides with her moving into CMU's leadoff spot. She is batting .444 over that span with four multi-hit games.
"She's settled into it really well and she's doing exactly what we need her to do in that spot," Salmon said.
