Baseball Falls At Western, Drops Into First-Place Tie In The MAC

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Brandon Petersen and Will Mullen combined to limit Central Michigan's normally potent offense on Friday as Western Michigan defeated the Chippewas, 8-3, in the opener of a four-game Mid-American Conference baseball series at the Broncos' Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
The loss was CMU's third straight in MAC play and it left the Chippewas 22-7 in the conference and tied with Ball State, an 8-2 winner at Kent State on Friday, at the top of the standings.
CMU is 31-14 overall. The Broncos are 18-21 overall, 17-12 MAC. The Chippewas and Broncos are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (noon).
Mullen (6-1) went the final 4 1/3 innings in relief of Peterson. They combined to strike out eight, walk six and surrender four hits and Western played error-free defense behind them and turned two double plays.
The Chippewas stranded eight base runners, including three in the seventh inning when Western right fielder Will Morrison made an inning-ending over-the-shoulder catch of a drive off the bat of CMU's Garrett Navarra.
Western Michigan broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fifth inning, chasing Chippewa starter Jordan Patty (7-2), who took the loss. Western added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Zach Gilles had three hits and two RBI to lead CMU, and Mario Camilletti added two hits.
"Western Michigan was ready to go, they played really well, they had some good at-bats," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "(Patty) was not his sharpest and they really took advantage of every opportunity. Give credit. They've got a really good record in the league for a reason and for whatever reason we were just a little bit off today.
"I'm confident that we'll bounce right back tomorrow, play a little bit better baseball and we'll see where that leaves us."
