Baseball Remains In First Place After Split At Western

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Andrew Taylor was superb, and he got ample run support on Saturday as the Central Michigan baseball team topped Western Michigan, 11-0, in the opener of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at the Broncos' Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
The Broncos took the nightcap, 10-3. Both games went seven innings. The Chippewas are 23-8 in MAC play and share first place with Ball State, which split a doubleheader with Kent State on Saturday.
CMU and Western are scheduled to close the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Taylor (9-3) struck out seven and allowed just three hits over six innings in lowering his earned run average to 1.45 as the Chippewas bounced back after dropping the series opener on Friday, 8-3.
"That first game we did a great job bouncing back, which I expected we would," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "It's always good to have (Taylor) out there coming off a loss, knowing that he's going to give you a good outing. The guys got behind him with the offense and the defense too."
Every Chippewa starter had at least one hit as CMU tied its season high with 18 hits. Mario Camilletti and Justin Simpson had three hits apiece to lead the Chippewas, who seized a 3-0 lead in the third inning and then scored in every inning from there on out.
The Broncos turned the tables in the nightcap, breaking a 3-3 tie with a solo homer from Blake Dunn leading off the third inning. The Broncos added two runs in each of the next three innings.
"Western Michigan's a good team," Bischel said. "If you don't play good baseball against that team, they are going to beat you. We just didn't play real good baseball."
Cameron Brown (6-2) took the loss. He surrendered eight runs, just three of which were earned, on six hits, while walking five over 4 1/3 innings. Logan Buczkowski and Ben Vitas pitched in relief.
Simpson had two of the Chippewas' six hits, including a two-run single in the second inning that tied the game, 3-3.
"We've got nine (conference) games to play as a group," Bischel said. "We don't want to give any away in terms of how hard we play, how much intensity we play with.
"These seasons go by fast, and in the stretch run we've got to take advantage of every opportunity not because of the standings, but because we put a lot of time into this thing, and we've got to enjoy the stretch run."
