Baseball Rolls Past Eastern In Series Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan scored early and then poured it on, giving Jordan Patty ample support on Friday as the Chippewas rolled past Eastern Michigan, 14-0, in the opener of a four-game Mid-American Conference baseball series at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The win lifted CMU to 33-16, 24-9 MAC as it remains in first place. The game was called after 6 ½ innings on the run rule.
The Chippewas collected 17 hits, one shy of their season high, in bouncing back from last weekend's series at Western Michigan, where they dropped three of four games for their first league series loss of the season.
"We gave the guys a couple of days off and they just came out with a ton of energy," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "For the most part we've opened series really well for the last month and a half, we've had a good routine going and done a good job of preparing. I thought the guys got their legs back under them today.
"It was just nice to see a lot of guys contribute and be ready to go. Now we've just got to hit the reset button and be ready to go again tomorrow."
The Chippewas and Eagles, 20-24, 14-19, are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) and are slated to close the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Zach Heeke, a senior playing in his final home series, had two doubles, a single and drove in three runs to lead the Chippewas at the plate. Mario Camilletti doubled twice, and Garrett Navarra, Jakob Marsee and Chase Rollin finished with two hits each.
Six of CMU's 17 hits went for extra bases.
Patty (8-2), a junior right-hander, was his usual self, striking out five and surrendering three hits over 5 2/3 innings. No Eastern Michigan baserunner advanced past second base and it marked the sixth time in nine MAC starts that Patty has not allowed a run.
"What was impressive is he wasn't as sharp as a few of his outings earlier this season, so we sequenced pitches a little bit differently," Bischel said. "We pitched differently than he has in a while and he adjusted really well to that, made the pitches he had to make, and did a really nice job and we played really good defense behind him."
Zach Gilles tripled with one out in the second inning and scored on Griffin Lockwood-Powell's infield single to give the Chippewas a 1-0 lead.
CMU got RBI singles from Marsee and Aidan Shepardson during a three-run third to extend its lead to 4-0, and then made it 5-0 on Navarra's run-scoring single in the fourth.
The Chippewas sent 10 men to the plate in scoring seven runs in the fifth, highlighted by two-run doubles from Camilletti and Rollin, and a three-run double by Heeke. Zach Lechnir added a two-run single in the sixth.
