MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A new addition and a promotion for Central Michigan Track & Field/Cross Country.
Jenny Swieton, CMU's director of track & field/cross country, has named Amanda Eccleston to an assistant-coaching post and has promoted Michael Schober to associate head coach.
Eccleston has served since 2016-17 as a volunteer assistant coach at Michigan. She won an indoor national title in the distance medley relay and was an All-American in the outdoor 1,500-meter run as a Wolverine in 2013.
She is scheduled to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 1,500 meters on Friday, June 18, in Eugene, Ore.
Schober, who joined Swieton's staff in 2019, coaches sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers.
"I am so excited to elevate coach Schober to associate head coach," said Swieton, who is entering her fifth year in charge of the program. "He stepped up big when we needed him over this past year. He is willing to do whatever the program needs of him for us to be successful. He is an excellent coach and even better person. Every student-athlete on the team knows that they can go to him.
"We had such a great team dynamic this year despite all of the challenges we faced. The addition of coach Eccleston and the promotion of coach Schober will help us build on that. I can't wait to see what the future holds."
Eccleston will serve as Swieton's assistant coach in the cross country programs and will work with the middle distance and distance runners on the track & field team.
Before competing as a graduate student at Michigan, where she won Big Ten titles in the indoor mile and the outdoor 1,500, Eccleston was a three-time NCAA Division II national champion and a six-time All-American at Hillsdale. She captured national titles in the 800, the 1,500 and the mile; and was also an All-American in cross country.
"We couldn't be more excited to add coach Eccleston to our staff," Swieton said. "She knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level. She shares our values as a coaching staff and our vision for the program. She is a perfect fit."
Eccleston has run professionally with Brooks Running since 2016 and served as an assistant track & field coach at Huron High School in Ann Arbor in 2015.
At Michigan, Eccleston helped lead the Wolverines to three-consecutive Big Ten cross country championships from 2016-18 and coached 15 First Team All-Americans, 14 Big Ten champions, 16 NCAA track & field qualifiers and one NCAA champion.
Eccleston earned a bachelor's degree with a major in biology from Hillsdale in 2012 and holds a Master's of Public Health from Michigan.
