MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan won seven matches, scoring bonus points in three of them, in downing Ohio, 24-10, on Sunday in a Mid-American Conference wrestling dual meet at McGuirk Arena.
It was the eighth consecutive dual victory for CMU, which improved to 9-2, 4-0 MAC. Ohio is 6-3, 2-2. The Chippewas are 23rd in the InterMat national top 25 dual-meet rankings and are 10th in the USA Wrestling Mid-Major Coaches Poll.
Ohio, which had won six of its previous seven duals entering Sunday's battle, is 11th in the mid-major poll.
"Ohio has a good team," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "If you look at their (won-loss) records, they have some pretty good records on that team.
"There were some close matches that could have gone either way and our guys had enough grit to pull them out -- most of them anyway. We could have been more competitive in one match, but other than that, I thought we wrestled really good."
The Chippewas won three duals on each of the past two weekends. Among those six duals were victories over Campbell and South Dakota State, both of which were ranked in the top 25 nationally. The Camels were third in the mid-major poll and the Jackrabbits were fifth.
"I think we're ahead of where I was thinking we were going to be," said Borrelli, whose team goes to Edinboro and then Kent State next weekend for MAC duals.
The Chippewas got major decision victories on Sunday from Dresden Simon (141 pounds), Tracy Hubbard (165) and Matt Stencel (285). CMU's Brock Bergelin (125), Corbyn Munson (149), Johnny Lovett (157) and Aaron Bolo (197) each won by decision.
• Munson, who is ranked 27th nationally, posted a 4-1 win over 32nd-ranked Alec Hagan. Hagan defeated Munson, 6-3, during the 2020 season. Munson, who has won six straight matches and 12 of his last 13, is 19-4; Hagan is 20-5.
"When a kid has lost to someone before and then he beats him, he feels like he's improving and his work is worthwhile," Borrelli said. "It's always nice when you feel like you're improving."
• Hubbard's 14-2 victory was his team-high fifth major of the season. He led 5-0 entering the third period and recorded two takedowns and a four-point near fall and then tacked on a riding time point for his sixth win in his last seven matches. Three of those wins have come on major decisions.
• Lovett, who is ranked 18th, emerged with a 9-5 victory after a physical battle with 26th-ranked Jordan Slivka. It was the eighth straight win for Lovett, who improved to 15-4. Slivka is 19-4.
• The 12th-ranked Simon ran his win streak to eight matches and improved to 13-3 with his second major-decision victory of the season. Stencel, who is ranked eighth, won his seventh straight and upped his record to 11-3 with his first major of the season. He has eight pins.
• Bergelin won for the sixth time in his last seven matches in improving to 15-7. He earned a riding time point for a tight 2-1 win over Oscar Sanchez to open the dual.
• Bolo bounced back from a loss by pin last week against South Dakota State with an 8-4 win over Carson Brewer. It was the sixth win for Bolo (10-5) in his last seven bouts.
