Softball Drops 2 At Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Central Michigan softball team opened the season on Friday, dropping two games in the Western Kentucky Hilltopper Classic.
The Chippewas fell to Southeast Missouri State, 6-0, in their opener and then fell to the host Hilltoppers, 10-2.
CMU is scheduled to play two games on Saturday, the first against Bellarmine at 11 a.m. The Chippewas then face an opponent to be determined later on Saturday. CMU closes the event with a single game on Sunday.
SEMO pitcher Rachel Rook, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, threw a no-hitter against the Chippewas. She struck out 12. Shannon Stein broke up Rook's perfect game bid with a two-out walk in the seventh inning.
Grace Lehto went the distance in taking the loss. She allowed four earned runs on nine hits, walked two, and struck out five.
CMU got a two-run double from Caitlyn Britton in jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Western Kentucky.
The Hilltoppers answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, and then tacked on three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth. The game ended on the run rule with two out in the bottom of the sixth.
Abbey Tolmie finished with two hits to lead CMU at the plate.
CMU finished with four hits off winning pitcher Katie Gardner, who struck out nine in going the distance.
Kaitlyn Bean started for the Chippewas and went five innings in taking the loss. She allowed seven runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out two. Only two of the runs charged to Bean were earned as the Chippewas committed three errors.
Freshman Maddy Wallace worked the sixth for the Chippewas.
