Gymnasts Hit Season High At Kentucky Quad

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Central Michigan gymnastics team posted a season-high 195.550 score on Friday in a quad at Kentucky's Memorial Coliseum.
The Chippewas finished fourth in the event behind the host Wildcats, who posted a 197.450 team score. Georgia was second (196.125) and Illinois was third (195.650).
Kentucky is ranked 12th nationally, while the Illini are 26th, and Georgia is 32nd. The Chippewas are ranked 50th.
"It was a great field of competition and that's something you're looking at in the postseason as well," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "These are the same teams that we see in the postseason, and it comes down to every tenth and that's something we'll continue to work for.
"Week in, week out we continue to grow and that's something you want to see in your team."
The Chippewas' score was nearly an entire point better than their previous season best, a 194.650 that came last week in a tri-meet at Ball State.
CMU's top individual places, third, came from Hannah DeMers on vault and from Sierra DeMarinis on floor exercise.
DeMers posted a 9.850 score on vault, while DeMarinis scored a sterling 9.900 on floor, her season best.
"Sierra DeMarinis with a 9.9, that brings her back to where she was last year," MacDonald said. "I thought that was just a great energized floor performance. That score is something she has yet to hit on floor and I thought that was really a shining moment for her."
DeMers and DeMarinis tied for sixth on balance beam at 9.825, while CMU's Katie Kowalski (9.775) tied for ninth.
Kowalski and teammate Elizabeth Cesarone finished among a group tied for seventh (9.825) on vault.
The Chippewas started on bars and they, like gymnasts on all four teams, had to deal with delays due to a shortage of judges and traveling issues resulting from the winter storm that has hammered most of the eastern U.S.
Still, the Chippewas posted a 48.750 score on bars, which is just shy of their season best. Adriana Bustelo led off the event for CMU and finished tied for ninth at 9.850.
"That was a really nice set there," MacDonald said of Bustelo. "I say this all the time: They're very adaptable and they're very resilient and being the team to start on bars and deal with the delay, I thought they did a great job of staying composed and coming back from last weekend where we didn't hit bars.
"To hit bars today in that environment shows their growth and their maturity."
DeMers tied for ninth (9.850) on floor and placed second all around with a 39.350 score.
CMU returns to McGuirk Arena on Friday, Feb. 11 (7 p.m.) when it entertains Western Michigan and Michigan State in a tri-meet. The meet with Western will count in the Mid-American Conference standings.
