Softball Drops MAC Opener At Akron

AKRON, Ohio – Akron exploded for six runs in the second inning on Saturday in handing Central Michigan an 8-2 softball loss in the Mid-American Conference opener for both squads at Akron's Lee R. Jackson Field.
The Chippewas and Zips are scheduled to close their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday (12 p.m.). CMU is 9-11; Akron is 3-16.
The Zips took advantage of three walks, a hit batter, two infield singles, and a CMU error in scoring six runs in the second inning on Saturday.
The Chippewas got a run in the fifth on an RBI infield single by Samantha Mills and then Kelsey Alexander homered in the seventh. It was Alexander's third home run of the season.
Michaleigh Vallimont had two hits to lead the Chippewas at the plate.
CMU starter Kaitlyn Bean allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit over 1 1/3 innings in taking the loss. Maddy Wallace and Caitlyn Britton pitched in relief.
Lexie Petrof struck out nine and allowed five hits in earning the win.
