Basseball Completes Sweep With 13-Run Onslaught

OXFORD, Ohio – A seven-run sixth inning and a seventh-inning Jakob Marsee grand slam propelled Central Michigan to a 13-1 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Monday, earning the Chippewa baseball team a four-game Mid-American Conference series sweep at the RedHawks' McKie Field.
The Chippewas (9-8, 5-1 MAC), who extended their win streak to five games, are slated to play a three-game series with nonconference opponent Iowa (9-8) starting on Friday, March 25 (5 p.m.) at the Hawkeyes' Duane Banks Field.
The Hawkeyes, who were picked third in the 2022 Big Ten coaches' preseason poll, earned a 6-3 win on Sunday to split a two-game series with No. 12 Texas Tech.
"Our team is always built around pitching and defense and making it hard to score," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Our pitchers did a great job pounding the strike zone and our defenders did a great job of making plays behind those pitchers."
CMU starter Logan Buczkowski allowed one run on two hits, struck out five, and walked one over 3 2/3 innings.
Ryan Palmblad (2-0) went 2 1/3 innings in relief for the win. He allowed two hits and struck out five. Ben Vitas worked the seventh and final frame, striking out three and walking one.
Marsee's seventh-inning slam came on a 1-1 pitch, and it was his team-high third round-tripper of the season. That followed the Chippewas' seven-run sixth, highlighted by Danny Wuestenfeld's three-run double.
CMU collected 11 hits including six doubles. The Chippewas' 11 hits matched their second-highest total of the season, and their 13 runs marked a season high. The Chippewas outscored the RedHawks, 28-7, over the four-game series. Miami is 7-11, 4-4.
"All game long, the guys were in tune with the game and energetic," Bischel said. "It was good to see and (Marsee) kind of capped off the day.
"We had a nice lead at the time, and he's been swinging the bat well. He just put a great swing on the ball to seal the game and it was a great way to cap off the weekend."
Marsee collected five RBI giving him a team-high 19 on the season. Justin Simpson led the Chippewas with four hits, while Wuestenfeld and Garrett Navarra tallied two each.
"The guys feel good, and Iowa's going to be a challenge," Bischel said. "It'll be a good challenge for us, a big nonconference weekend to keep getting ourselves ready for the rest of MAC play and I know our guys are going to be excited to play against a good team."
