CMU's Ashley Goh stands tied for second place, 3 shots off the pace
PROSPECT, Ky. – The Central Michigan women's golf team posted a pair of 309 rounds for a 36-hole 618 total on Monday at the Cleveland State Nevel Meade Collegiate at Nevel Meade Golf Club.
The third and final round of the 54-hole event is scheduled for Tuesday (9 a.m.).
The Chippewas stand in third place in the 15-team field. They trail co-leaders Cleveland State and Youngstown State by seven shots. CMU sits three shots in front of fourth-place Bellarmine.
"We didn't play our best and we have a chance to win, so we can't be too disappointed with that," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "The conditions were tough; it was pretty windy and it's a pretty exposed course. We just didn't make a lot of birdies and so we didn't shoot our usual 300 or below."
Ashley Goh shot an opening-round 74 and then followed with a 75 for a 149 total to lead the Chippewas.
She is tied for second place, three shots behind Bellarmine's Josephine Bonin, who shot 76-70 – 146.
Goh's first round included three birdies against five bogeys; she made one birdie and four bogeys in the second round and carded no worse than a bogey over her 36 holes.
"She was steady," Earle said. "She just sort of played Ashley Goh golf. She was hitting the ball well.
"I look for her to contend for that individual title. I think that'll be super exciting. She's got good distance and she hits a lot of fairways, and she pitches the ball really well.
"She just didn't seem to ever be in any big jeopardy and there's some really tricky holes out here. She played those well and that's why she's up at the top of the leaderboard. She played the tough holes pretty strong."
CMU's Claudia Salvador is tied for ninth after a 36-hole 153 total. Salvador opened with a 75 and then posted a second-round 78.
Also for the Chippewas, Casilda Allendesalazar shot 80-77 – 157, Padgett Chitty shot 80-79 – 159, and Zoe Vartyan shot 80-82 – 162.
Two Chippewas, Rachel Kauflin and Mackenzie Baustad, are playing the tournament as individuals. Kauflin shot 79-80 – 159 and Baustad shot 85-77 – 162.
"The weather's going to be really bad tomorrow," Earle said. "It's going to be raining the entire time and it's going to be windy and cold. We're sort of looking forward to that and to bringing those two teams tied at the top back to us and make a good charge."
