MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Three Central Michigan gymnasts will begin their quest for a national championship on Thursday when they partake in the NCAA Regional at Auburn University's Neville Arena.
CMU's Hannah DeMers, Sierra DeMarinis and Katie Kowalski will partake in the three-day competition at one of four regional sites across the country. The top competitors – individuals and teams – from those four sites advance to the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, April 14-16.
DeMers, the Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Year, will compete in the all around; DeMarinis will partake on the floor exercise; and Kowalski will compete on vault. All three will compete on Thursday night.
"It's been very exciting to see the growth in our three individuals," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "All three are great representatives of our team and they have all prepared through the entire season for this. I think we're going to see great performances out of all of them."
Each regional comprises nine teams going to head-to-head in duals until two remain after Saturday competition. Those two remaining teams advance to the NCAA Championships along with the top individuals in each event, plus the all around champion, from non-advancing teams.
Among the nine teams at Auburn are No. 2-ranked Florida and No. 7 Auburn, along with Denver, Ohio State and Georgia, each of which is in the top 25.
"It's a very strong regional, very challenging," MacDonald said. "Our gymnasts are in very good company, and it gives them an outstanding opportunity to showcase their gymnastics."
