Softball Splits On Day 1 In Florida

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Central Michigan softball team finished with a loss and a win on Friday on the first day of the Spring Games at R.O.C. Park.
The Chippewas dropped a 3-0 morning game to Southern Mississippi before claiming a 4-1 victory over Nebraska at Omaha.
CMU (5-5) is set to play a single game with Middle Tennessee State on Saturday (11 a.m.) before playing Rhode Island (9 a.m.) and Georgetown (11:30 a.m.) on Sunday. The Chippewas will close the Spring Games on Tuesday, March 8, with a noon doubleheader against Long Island.
Southern Miss (13-5) collected six hits off Chippewa starter Kaitlyn Bean, who went the distance. Bean (2-2) took the loss, striking out six and walking one while surrendering two earned runs.
Six Chippewas picked up on hit each against the Golden Eagles.
Shannon Stein hit a two-run homer in the first inning to spark the Chippewas against Omaha. CMU got two bases-loaded walks, one to Michaleigh Vallimont, the other to Skylar Coberley, in the second inning for its final two runs. It was Stein's fourth home run of the season. She shares the MAC lead in that category.
Grace Lehto (3-2) struck out 12 in going the distance for the win. She allowed 11 hits and stranded 10 Omaha base runners.
Omaha starter Sydney Nuismer took the loss.
