MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A strong comeback effort, but not quite enough.
The Central Michigan volleyball team rallied from a 0-2 deficit on Saturday but fell just short to Nicholls, falling in five sets in the finale of the Memphis Tiger Brawl at Memphis' Larry O. Finch Center.
The Colonels claimed the first two sets, 25-22, before the Chippewas, who rallied from two sets down to beat host Memphis on Friday, ignited a similar fight, earning themselves the 26-24 third-set win and then a 25-4 victory in the fourth, triggered by Kamryn Olson's four aces.
A competitive fifth set ensued, building to a 15-15 stalemate before the Colonels used a CMU service error to take a 16-15 lead and then a kill to take the set, 17-15.
Outside hitter Mallory Hernandez posted a season-high 22 kills to lead the Chippewas, while Maddie Whitfield followed with 10 kills and seven blocks. Natalia Rejment, Anna Erickson and Elly Medendorp finished with nine kills each.
CMU libero Aly Gurtiza and Olson finished with 16 digs apiece. Olson had 36 assists.
The Chippewas are scheduled to travel to Saint Louis next weekend for the Billiken Invitational. They open with Youngstown State (2-1) on Friday, Sept. 2 (11 a.m.) before playing St. Thomas (1-2) at 4 p.m. The Chippewas are slated to close the tournament on Saturday against Billikens.
