HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Philippe Yturralde shot an even-par 71 on Tuesday to lead the Central Michigan men's golf team during the final round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club.
Yturralde, who opened the tournament on Monday with 72-74 – 146, finished with a 217 total and among a group tied for 27th. Yturralde began Tuesday's final round tied for 46th and moved up 19 places.
The Chippewas posted a 296 team score on Monday and finished with a 54-hole 882 total, good for 12th place, seven shots behind 11th-place Cleveland State.
The Chippewas opened the season last week with a ninth-place finish in a 15-team event hosted by Ball State. CMU is in its first year with men's golf after a 37-year hiatus.
Of the six Chippewas (five on the team, one individual) who played at Marshall, none shot worse than 5-over par 76 for a single round and Ethan Jaehn shot a 1-under 70 during Monday's second round. It was the first sub-par round by a Chippewa this season.
All five players in CMU's lineup are freshmen.
"I think we did very well," coach Kevin Jennings said. "After not having golf for 40 years, there's always going to be a learning curve as far as everyone understanding what Division I golf is all about as well as learning how we're supposed to progress from round to round.
"I saw some steady progress in that department and we're looking forward to applying what we've learned here and learning more."
Jaehn closed with a 75 on Tuesday to finish with a 218 total and tied for 32nd.
Also for CMU, Orlando Coons and Nicholas Kilgore both shot 75 on Tuesday, while Jeffrey Andrus posted a 76. Coons finished at 224, tied for 67th, and Kilgore finished at 225, tied for 72nd.
CMU's Arie Jackman, playing as an individual, joined Kilgore in the group at 225 after closing with a 76. The field comprised 94 players.
"Our best golf is ahead of us," Jennings said. "And I know, and I see, that all the gentlemen are learning and understanding and trusting the process.
"The numbers aren't very indicative of the progress that we're experiencing. We all know that we're capable of producing better than what we've produced thus far, and we know we have a bright future together."
Appalachian State shot a final-round 295 to finish with an 845 total to win the event. The Mountaineers finished four shots ahead of second-place Marshall, the tournament host.
Marshall's Tyler Jones closed with a 2-under 69 to finish at 8-under 205 for a three-shot victory over Nick Rakes of Longwood.
