Chippewas post 22 top-eight finishes at Falcon Early Bird
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Central Michigan track & field team took third place on Saturday at the Falcon Early Bird Collegiate Open at Perry Fieldhouse.
The Chippewas, who finished with 103 points, had an all-around competitive day, scoring points in every event area. Host Bowling Green was first with 111 points; Eastern Michigan (110) was second.
"It was definitely a very good first meet of 2023 for us," CMU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said. "It was a full, complete team performance and that is always our goal, to do it together. I am really happy with how it went."
CMU finished with 22 Top-eight finishes.
Anya Turner won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.55. She was followed by Emma Fountain, second; Grace Jenkins, sixth; Lauren Lasceski, seventh; and Libby Munderloh, eighth.
"Across the board they competed really well, and I think a lot of that is they're getting more confident," Swieton said. "The more confident you are the better you are at pushing and catching someone at the very end of the race.
"They did a really good job at trusting that they had the ability to catch the people in front and going for it."
Turner finished third in the mile run, with Maija Rettelle finishing in fourth for the Chippewas. Jelena Prescott finished third in the 3,000-meter run.
In the 60-meter dash, CMU's Reghan Draper finished third with a time of 7.60 seconds. Jericha Petrella and Annie Laurenz placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash.
Peyton Korytkowski had a strong day for the Chippewas, placing third in the 60-meter hurdles and running a leg on CMU's winning 4x400 relay.
Emma Fountain, Annie Laurenz, and Jericha Petrella joined Korytkowski in the relay. They finished in 3:56.78.
The Chippewas B and C squads placed fourth and seventh, respectively, in the event.
CMU's Angelina Horn finished third in the triple jump at 12.17 meters, while teammate Hayley Manners placed sixth.
The Chippewas' Mahogany Wells and Aliyah Boeve placed third and sixth, respectively, in the weight throw.
"We are just going to work on getting a little better every day," Swieton said. "Obviously everyone else is going to get a little bit better, so we need to too, but we want to get better at a faster rate.
"Just going back to work and getting more and more race experience will always help."
CMU will host the Jack Skoog Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Indoor Athletic Complex. It is the only home meet CMU has this season.
