CMU opens its 2022-23 season as Adriana Bustelo (beam) and Luciana Alvarado-Reid (bars) both tie for individual lead in their respective events; Hannah DeMers takes second in the all-around competition.
DURHAM, N.H.—Junior Adriana Bustelo (beam) and freshman Luciana Alvarado-Reid (bars) both turned in individual first-place performances as Central Michigan opened its 2022-23 gymnastics season with a second-place team finish at Saturday's New Hampshire Tri-Meet, held at UNH's Whittemore Center. Final results and scoring can be found at this link.
Central Michigan began the day with an unfortunate situation as junior All-MAC performer Katie Kowalski suffered an injury in pre-meet warmups. Kowalski was slated to compete in three of four events on the afternoon.
"I'm really proud of our team for staying together and coming back from a situation where our thoughts are with Katie and thinking of her," MacDonald said. "After losing a starter, you have to reset. The lineups changed and we adapted, the team stepped up and gave great effort. I want to thank UNH and Temple as both were great about everything and really supportive for our team. It was very much appreciated."
The Chippewas concluded the meet in second place with a 194.100 score behind host New Hampshire (194.475). Temple concluded the tri-meet in third place at 193.200.
Senior Hannah DeMers finished second in the all-around competition with a 38.775, while Alvarado-Reid, who was competing in her first collegiate meet, took fourth with a 38.150.
Central Michigan began the day on beam. Registering the Chippewas' highest scores on beam were junior Adriana Bustelo, who tied a career-best with a 9.875 performance, and senior Aleysia Kolyvanova, who scored a 9.775. Bustelo's score tied for the best beam performance at the meet.
Next up was the floor exercise where the Chippewas surged into first place in the team competition. The Chippewas were fueled by a pair of 9.800s from senior Taylor Pitchell and junior Elizabeth Buttle, whose score marked a career-best. Alvarado-Reid (9.775) and redshirt sophomore Hallie Hornbacher (9.750) both added stellar scores.
On vault, junior Elizabeth Cesarone and Alvarado-Reid both turned in 9.750 performances, and sophomore Avah Bootz contributed a 9.725.
On the bars, the Chippewas were led by Alvarado-Reid, who ended up tying for the day's best mark with a 9.850, while Bustelo contributed a 9.825, and DeMers added a 9.800.
"We had highlights in some events," MacDonald said. "Adriana (Bustelo) gave us a great performance on balance beam. I was proud of Elizabeth (Buttle) and Taylor (Pitchell), who were our high performers on floor. On vault, we received a strong performance from Elizabeth Cesarone. Luci was the high scorer in bars and Hannah did a great job of finishing the meet strong."
A total of 13 gymnasts competed for the Chippewas.
Central Michigan returns home to host the first of three meets on Saturday, Jan. 21 against Northern Illinois. The meet begins at 2 p.m. at McGuirk Arena.
