Goh tied for sixth; Rachel Kauflin shoots career-best 71 to highlight CMU's day
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Ashley Goh shot twin 73s for a 2-over par 146 total to lead the Central Michigan women's golf team on Monday during day 1 of the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational at Eagle Crest Golf Course.
Goh, a senior and the defending medalist, is tied for sixth place in the 70-player field, nine shots behind Ava O'Sullivan of Bowling Green, who shot 70-67 – 137.
The Chippewas, who won the tournament a year ago, are in ninth place in the 11-team field. They opened with a 309 team total and followed with a 302 in Monday's second round. The third and final round of the 54-hole event is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
CMU trails Akron and Cleveland State, which are tied for seventh at 608, and sixth-place Green Bay (606) by five shots.
Goh, who finished at 3-under in last year's event, which was shortened to 36 holes, led the field with 29 pars on Monday and her day included a first-round eagle on No. 18, a 340-yard par 4.
Goh started on No. 6 and was even through 17 holes. Her eagle brought her to 2-under and then she finished with three bogeys in her final five holes for a 1-over total. Her second-round 1-over 73 included one birdie and two bogeys.
Also for the Chippewas on Monday, senior Rachel Kauflin shot 79-71 – 150, senior Mackenzie Baustad shot 79-77 – 156, freshman Lexi Schulman carded 78-81 – 159, sophomore Alexis McMurray shot 79-85 – 164, and freshman Rachel Niskanen shot 83-86 – 169.
Kauflin's second-round 71 is a career best, eclipsing her previous low of 72, and her 36-hole 150 total is one shy of her career-best 149. Kauflin, who recorded 24 pars and four birdies, is among a group tied for 15th.
Oakland and Bowling Green are tied for the top spot in the team standings, while Western Michigan is third. The Golden Grizzlies opened with a 290 and then followed with a 289 for a 579 total; Bowling Green posted a first-round 291 and then followed with a 288. Western (303-288) is 12 shots back at 591.
