Mistake-Prone Chippewas Fall at Buffalo

Buffalo turned four Central Michigan turnovers into 24 points on Saturday in handing the Chippewas a 37-13 Mid-American Conference football loss at UB Stadium.
The loss ended CMU's win streak at two games. The Chippewas are 3-3, 1-1 MAC and entertain Akron on Saturday, Oct. 14 (3:30 p.m.) in their homecoming game on Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
"They beat us and beat us bad," CMU coach Jim McElwain said. "We couldn't run the football, (we) dropped passes. Obviously the turnovers – I don't care who you play, you're not going to win playing like that.
They just out-physicalled us and (I'm) embarrassed for our play up front. Hats off to them; they took advantage of it."
Buffalo, 2-4, 2-0, returned two interceptions for touchdowns, set up a third touchdown with another interception and recovered a fumble that led to a field goal. The Bulls led, 23-7, at halftime and then got a pick-six less than two minutes into the second half to up their lead to 30-7.
The Chippewas actually finished with the edge in first downs and total yardage, two statistics that, generally, are good barometers and telling as to which team won.
But the turnovers were absolute poison, as they usually are. CMU had committed just four turnovers all season heading into Saturday's game.
"There wasn't any reason to raise your voice," McElwain said of his message to his players. "They feel bad enough as it is. The message quite simply is let's get back to work and let's do a good job of staying together. We get to play at home (next week) and hopefully we get another great crowd and get an opportunity to win at home and give ourselves a chance to get back in this thing."
