Three Chippewas—Anthony Pritchard (16), Brian Taylor (15), and Paul McMillan IV (12 points) reach double figure scoring in Central Michigan’s first Sunshine Slam competition.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Florida State hit 12 3-pointers and shot 56 percent from the floor as it built an early lead and maintained it throughout in registering a 94-67 victory over Central Michigan Monday evening at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The game marked the first Sunshine Slam contest for both teams.
Six Florida State players reached double figure scoring. Jamir Watkins led the Seminoles with 19 points and six rebounds, Darin Green Jr. finished with 16 points, Josh Nickelberry added 12, Baba Miller had 11, and Cam'Ron Fletcher and Cameron Corhen had 10 points apiece. Florida State hit 35 of 63 field goals and 12 of 28 3-point field goals (43 percent). The Seminoles also forced CMU into 21 turnovers.
Junior point guard Anthony Pritchard led the Chippewas with a season-high 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Senior Brian Taylor added a season-high 15 points and four rebounds, and sophomore Paul McMillan IV scored a season-high 12 points off the bench.
"We fought hard the whole game," Central Michigan Head Coach Tony Barbee said. "For 40 minutes we competed. Did we do everything right and were we perfect? No. Give Florida State credit, they force you into making a lot of mistakes. A lot of our mistakes were unforced."
"You can't get back what's past. If we competed like this in the first two games, our record would be completely different. This was a valuable lesson that we learned tonight. If we play connected like we did tonight and compete, we will have a chance in every game."
Host Florida State (2-0) led the entire way. The Seminoles jumped out to an 7-0 lead from the opening tipoff after Corhen hit a jumper and Watkins swished a 3-pointer and hit a layup. A 6-0 run pushed the lead to 12-1 on two Miller field goals and a jumper by Green. The Seminoles then used a 7-0 run over a 1:55 span to take a 25-8 lead with 11:55 to play in the first half. Florida State led by 20 points (50-30) at halftime.
In the first half, CMU shot 52.4 percent (11-21 FG), but turned the ball over 13 times.
Florida State outscored Central Michigan just 44-37 in the second half. A Brian Taylor 3-pointer cut the lead down to 19 points (70-51) with 10:51 to play. That was as close as Central Michigan came.
Next up for Central Michigan, the Chippewas travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on South Florida on Wednesday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. for an ESPN+ broadcast.
