Turner Posts 3000m Win; CMU Freshmen Showcase Talents in Season Opener
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — Central Michigan opened its 2023-24 indoor track and field slate on Friday at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Open, a prime opportunity for the Chippewa freshmen to compete in their first collegiate track and field events.
"We are so excited that track is back," said Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Jenny Swieton. "A lot of our freshmen were able to compete for the first time as Chippewas today and our returners were able to get the ball rolling again."
The Chippewas notched a victory from Anya Turner, who won the 3000m event in 10:11.15. Freshman Kara Terakedis ran the 5000m in 17:33.50 for a 12th place finish.
Emily Yoshino and Riley Nielsen, both freshman pole vaulters, placed 11th in their first collegiate event with a vault of 3.08m.
In the shot put, freshman Victoria Merrick covered 37.46 feet (11.42m) for 12th place; Ereka Risner placed 22nd and Grace Hill was 27th.
Risner took 12th in the weight throw with Emily McLean following in 13th. Merrick finished 24th.
While the Chippewas look to the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday, Dec. 8, Emily Paupore will be competing in the Maroon and Gold at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University on Saturday, Dec. 2.
"This meet was good for us to see where we are at going into winter break," Swieton said. "It helps the team stay motivated for what is to come."
