Three Chippewas Reach Semifinals at Midlands Championships

CMU, with six wrestlers still in the hunt for placings, stand second in 30-team field
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Three Central Michigan wrestlers are in the hunt for individual championships at the Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern, at NOW Arena.
CMU's Jimmy Nugent (141 pounds), Corbyn Munson (149) and Johnny Lovett (157) are scheduled to wrestle in semifinal matches on Saturday afternoon. The finals are set for Saturday night.
Nugent went 3-0 on Friday, while Munson and Lovett both went 4-0 to punch their respective tickets to the semis. The trio led a strong showing by the Chippewas, who are in second place with 65 points.
Penn (72) leads the 30-team field. West Virginia (57) is third, followed by Wisconsin (52) and Princeton (51.5).
Three other Chippewas – Sean Spidle (125), Tracy Hubbard (165) and Alex Cramer (174) – remain alive in the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes.
• Nugent, a sophomore who entered the tournament with a 7-5 record and was unseeded, pinned his first two opponents, Buffalo's Sam Ewing and Virginia's Jack Gioffre, the fourth seed who is ranked 20th nationally.
Nugent then upset fifth-seeded Dylan Layton, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. Layton is ranked second in the MAC in the weight class.
Nugent is scheduled to face top-seeded CJ Composto of Penn, who is ranked 11thnationally, in the semifinals.
• Munson, who was seeded third, is set to face Ty Watters of West Virginia in a semifinal on Saturday. Munson is ranked 14th nationally; Watters is 19th.
With his four wins on Friday, Munson ran his win streak to nine matches and improved to 13-2.
He opened a pin, his sixth of the season, of Michigan State's Clayton Jones, and then posted a 4-0 win over Andy Troczynski of Penn. He downed Jaivon Jones of Northern Illinois, 9-3, and then topped Caleb Tyus of SIU Edwardsville, 6-3, in overtime in a quarterfinal.
• Lovett, the seventh seed at 157, is set to face third-seeded Trevor Chumbley of Northwestern in a semifinal on Saturday. Chumbley is ranked 14th nationally; Lovett is 26th.
Lovett (14-2) opened with a 19-2 technical fall, his first of the season, over Patrick Downing of Ohio State. He then rolled to two major decision victories, the first 12-2 over Kade Law of Purdue, and the second 18-5 over Kailan Keith of Thomas More.
He then downed Chase Saldate of Michigan State, 9-6, breaking a 6-6 with a takedown with 6 seconds remaining.
Lovett upped his season bonus-point victory total to seven.
• Spidle, who was seeded 10th, opened with a 4-0 win over Derick Navarro of Northwestern and then won by injury default over Michigan State's Nick Corday.
In the quarterfinals, Spidle dropped a 4-1 TB-1 heartbreaker to Cooper Flynn of Virginia Tech, the No. 2 seed.
Spidle is set to take on Michigan State's Tristan Lujan, the ninth seed, in a consolation-bracket match on Saturday.
• Hubbard dropped his opening bout, 4-2, to Jack Stiles of Northern Illinois and then rebounded to win three consecutive matches.
He first posted a 16-4 major decision win over Rafael Knapp of Buffalo, and then beat teammate Tyler Swiderski, 9-6. He closed the day with an 8-2 win over Hunter Mays of Lehigh.
• Cramer, who was seeded fifth and ranked 18th nationally, opened with a 16-0 technical fall of Northern Illinois' Austin Stewart and then posted a 6-3 SV-1 win over Cael Valencia of Arizona State.
Cramer dropped a 9-7 decision to 12th-ranked Nick Incontrera of Penn, who was seeded fourth.
