Softball Drops Two on Day One of Hilltopper Classic

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Central Michigan Softball team dropped two games during the opening day of the Hilltopper Classic, falling 7-5 to Jacksonville State and losing a close 2-1 contest to host Western Kentucky in the nightcap. Two days remain in the three-day tournament.
Central Michigan moves to 2-4 on the young season.
In game one, Jacksonville State battled back from a 2-0 deficit with a seven-run fourth inning to defeat the Chippewas 7-5.
Central Michigan took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Maddie Springer's RBI single up the middle scored Kelsey Alexander. Abbey Tolmie's single up the middle scored Springer and gave the Chippewas a 2-0 lead.
Jacksonville State scored seven runs on four hits and took advantage of an error in the fourth inning.
Down 7-2, the Chippewas came back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Tolmie led the Chippewas with three hits and two RBI, Allyssa Hollo drove in two runs, while Springer and Alexander both finished with two hits apiece. Grace Lehto took the loss in the circle after allowing five earned runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. Madelyn Wallace pitched the last 3 1/3 innings and allowed no runs.
The nightcap featured a low-scoring pitchers' battle as Central Michigan's Kaitlyn Bean struck out five batters and allowed just two runs and six hits in a complete game 6.0 innings of action. She took the loss.
The Chippewas managed just one base hit, coming from Caitlyn Britton, who entered the game as a pinch hitter. Abbey Tolmie scored the Chippewas' lone run in the top of the first inning when she was walked then scored on a wild pitch.
Western Kentucky tied the game at 1-1 when an Addy Edgmon sacrifice fly drove in a run. WKU took a 2-1 lead on Taylor Sanders' RBI flyout.
WKU's Kelsie Houchens earned the win after allowing just one hit and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Maddy Wood picked up the save for the hosts.
On Saturday, Central Michigan will face host Western Kentucky at 1:30 p.m. (ET), then will play Illinois State at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
