Manners, Wells, relay squad earn medals on day one
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Central Michigan student-athletes scored in three events on Friday during the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at Bowling Green's Perry Field House.
CMU's Hayley Manners placed second in the long jump, Mohogany Wells was third in the weight throw, and the Chippewas' Anya Turner, Annie Laurenz, Maija Rettelle, and Emily Paupore combined to place third in the distance medley relay.
CMU stands in sixth place with 20 points heading into the second and final day of the Championships on Saturday. Field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., running events at 1:30 p.m.
Ball State (35 points) leads the 11-team event. Buffalo (25) is second.
"Coming into the meet we had a few goals," CMU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said. "Give everything we have, not be afraid of anybody, be the best cheer squad in the MAC, and have fun!
"We definitely did all of those things. We always do better when we're having fun, our team responds better when we aren't super series and we're having fun. We absolutely had the best cheer squad in the MAC and we had a ton of our kids drive down to support those who competed.
"Every single person who competed fought with everything they had today. We had some season bests, we had some (personal records), but mostly we had some really gritty performances. That's what it's all about."
• Manners, the reigning league indoor long jump champion, finished second with a leap of 6.01 meters (19 feet, 8 ½ inches). Buffalo's Christina Wende was first at 6.04 meters (19-9 ¾).
• Wells' best weight throw measured 18.66 meters (61-3). Grace Luther of Kent State won with a 19.28-meter (63-3) toss.
• Turner (1200 meters), Laurenz (400), Rettelle (800) and Paupore (1600) battled valiantly in the DMR, finishing in 11:46.64. Toledo was second in 11:46.10. Bowling Green (11:33.86) placed first.
"Our DMR, they were all competing against people who on paper where faster than them, but they were not afraid of anybody and they fought really, really hard, right to the line," Swieton said. "We just had a lot of gamer-type performances like that that I'm really proud of."
Two Chippewas, Reghan Draper (60-meter dash) and Peyton Korytkowski (60-meter hurdles), advanced to Saturday's finals.
Both recorded PRs, Draper a 7.51 and Korytkowski an 8.66, in heat races on Friday. Draper's time tied for the best of the day, and she will be the co-No. 1 seed in Saturday's 60-meter final.
Swieton also praised the efforts of CMU's Jelena Prescott and Jessie Gibbins, who placed 11th and 13th, respectively, in the highly competitive 5,000-meter run. The winner, Western Michigan's Makayla Perez, finished in 16:07.15, destroying the previous MAC indoor record by some 22 seconds.
The top four finishers in the race posted times that bested the previous record.
