MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State scored four unearned runs in the eighth inning on Wednesday in handing Central Michigan a 7-4 nonconference baseball loss in the Chippewas' home opener at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The loss ended the Chippewas' win streak at three games. CMU (9-7) opens Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Ohio this weekend. The series opener is scheduled for Friday, March 17 (4 p.m.).
Six Saginaw Valley pitchers combined to hold the Chippewas to three hits.
With the game tied, 3-3, Saginaw Valley's Jeffrey Reseigh singled with two out in the eighth inning. CMU pitcher Ryan Palmblad struck out Connor McClennan, but McClennan reached first when the third strike bounced away from Chippewa catcher Nick Dardas and first baseman Danny Wuestenfeld dropped the throw from Dardas.
The ball bounded into right field, allowing McClennan to take second base and Reseigh moved to third.
Jaccar Watkins then walked on a ball-four wild pitch on which Reseigh scampered home to put the Cardinals in front, 4-3.
Tucker Roe then singled to drive in a run to make it 5-3, and the Cardinals added two more runs on an error to up their lead to 7-4.
CMU committed three errors in the game and had just one hit, a Wuestenfeld fourth-inning single, until Garrett Navarra doubled in the eighth and Nick Dardas hit a solo homer – his first round-tripper of the season – in the ninth.
Palmblad (0-1), the fifth of six Chippewa pitchers, took the loss. Evan Waters started for CMU. Ben Vitas, Jack Bach, Ryan Insco and Nate Ross pitched in relief.
CMU got two of its run in the fourth inning when Robby Morgan IV hit a fly ball to left field that went for an error, allowing Cole Prout and Wuestenfeld to score.
Jacob Donahue drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to force in CMU's other run, tying the game 3-3.
