ATHENS, Ohio – The Central Michigan baseball team fell into an early deficit and could never catch Ohio on Saturday as the Bobcats handed the Chippewas an 11-7 Mid-American Conference loss at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Chippewas are 10-8, 1-1 MAC. They face the Bobcats (5-11, 3-2) on Sunday (1 p.m.) in the rubber match of the three-game series.
Chippewa pitching surrendered three home runs among 13 hits – both season highs for a CMU opponent – on Saturday.
Cole Williams hit two of Ohio's home runs, the first a three-run shot that gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
The Chippewas pecked away but could never tie the game or take the lead. They drew to 3-2 in the fourth inning and to 7-6 after a three-run sixth.
The Bobcats scored two runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 9-6 and then added two more in the eighth.
Kade Preston and Marquis Jackson hit solo homers for CMU, which finished with nine hits but went just two for nine with runners in scoring position.
Preston's homer came in the fourth inning, and it was his first in 81 career at-bats. Jackson's homer was his third of the season.
Starter Keegan Batka (3-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits and struck out four over five innings in taking the loss. Ryan Insco, Nate Ross and Evan Waters each pitched an inning of relief.
