MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan Lacrosse team capped its regular season home games with a dominating 19-4 win over Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan. The Chippewas improve to 8-7 overall and 6-1 in MAC play, while the Eagles fall to 1-14 overall and 0-7 in the MAC.
Central Michigan was led by fifth year player, Maggie Diebold who scored five goals. Diebold, the Chippewas leading goal scorer, has now scored 46 goals in 2023. With one regular season game remaining and the Mid-American Conference Tournament, the 46 goals now place Diebold third in the CMU record book. Alongside Diebold, Kelly Hoyt and Skye Deprado recorded hat tricks on the evening. Amanda Hilderbrant, Sadie Hinkle and Reagan Martinsen each added two goals apiece, and Kendall Hoyt, along with Makenna Huhn got in on the scoring with one each.
Here is how the game unfolded: Kelly Hoyt ignited the Chippewa offense when she scored 40 seconds into the game. From that point, it was all Central Michigan. CMU went on a 5-0 run as Diebold grabbed two of her goals, in that stretch.
Eastern Michigan punched back for two but would not score again until the fourth quarter. A 12-goal Chippewa run was what expanded the lead to 15 until the Eagles scored on a free-position goal at the 14:26 mark in the fourth quarter.
The final goal in the game was scored by Eastern Michigan with 3:17 left in the game. For over three quarters of the game, there was a running clock. A running clock occurs when one team leads by 10 or more goals.
Central Michigan earns the victory over Eastern Michigan just days after dropping its first MAC game since the 2022 season to Kent State. First-year Head Coach, Emilia Ward says this was a good bounce back game for her team.
"The win tonight feels really good," Ward said. "I think the team responded well in the areas we needed to improve on after the Kent State game. A lot of those areas were in our control, we knew this would be a great opportunity to come out and fix those things. We shot at a high percentage tonight, cleaned up some things on the defensive end, and had what was probably our best defensive effort in a few games."
Hailie Moore set a new program record in the win over the Eagles. The Spring, Texas native caused six turnovers, which surpasses Logan Halvorson's record of five, set in 2019.
"It was no coincidence our defense looked better today because Hailie looked like she did for the first part of the season," Ward said. "She was incredibly disciplined, played within the team defensive mold, and was a huge piece of our clear game as well."
Next, the Chippewas will head to Pittsburgh, Pa. where they will face MAC rival Robert Morris for their final regular season conference game. Robert Morris, also 6-1 in the MAC, and Central Michigan faced off three times last season, the Chippewas earning wins in two of those three matches. Central Michigan defeated the Colonials and claimed the 2022 Mid-American Conference title.
The rematch is slated to start at noon on Saturday, April 29.
